Performers Profile:

SPARTAK http://www.myspace.com/spartakmusic
This July sees one of Australia’s most exciting improvising duos Spartak take the road again in support of their new mini album ‘No Signal’, a collection of new work following on from last year’s acclaimed ‘Tales From The Colony Room’, released on hellosQuare recordings. This tour will also see Spartak return to Singapore and Malaysia for the first time since 2007.

As Spartak, Shoeb Ahmad (guitar, computer, voice, woodwinds) and Evan Dorrian (drum kit, percussion, computer, field recordings) have spent the last three years exploring a hybrid sound of ‘indie’ rock, jazz improvisation, electronic music and modern composition.”

mux http://www.muxx.tk/
mux is a collective formed by Bani Haykal, Luqman Hakim and Siraaj Anwar; out to experiment and device new performances weaving sound design, music and text.

mux’s work deals with the coexistence of experimental lateral storytelling and layered, yet minimal, sound / music compositions. The stories they tell incorporate stream of consciousness, almost always resulting the text to become more of an ambient than a direction leading towards an end. Their interest in discovering new methods to deliver the crux of a given piece has resulted the trio to explore further into film soundtrack, sound design and live foley.

Aya Sekine http://aya.entropy.cc/

Born in Osaka Japan, Aya is an experimental jazz musician who has performed internationally with numerous renowned jazz musicians. Aya is also interested in the possibilities of experimental sound, and has collaborated with Singaporean artists Phillip Tan and Daniel K in their work. She is now based in Singapore, and plays regularly at Jazz@Southbridge and BluJaz Café.

Sonicbrat http://sonicbrat.wordpress.com/

SONICBRAT, is a believer in poetic imperfection and most of his music is performed and recorded on the fly without multi-tracking.

Sonicbrat is a Singapore-based sound artist and music composer whose electro-acoustic sound-bites have established him as one of the most sought after sound designers and music composers/arrangers in the local theatre and art scene, and whose sound is one that critics have described as part primordial and part industrial. His works have been compared to Erik Satie and Martin Denny by international music
reviewers from UK (WIRE: Ken Hollings) and Hong Kong (Hompy). Trained in classical piano, he has ventured into the digital realm of sampling, Musique Concrete, acousmatic music, digital and analogue synthesis, bringing a new sonic experience for his listeners.
He is currently an Associate Sound Designer for The Finger Players Ltd.

International Buy Nothing Day @ The Other Side!

November 21, 2008

International Buy Nothing Day @ The Other Side!

29th November is International Buy Nothing Day. A 24-Hour moratorium on shopping. Tied up so intimately with our outlook, lifestyle and eventual sustainability of our roots on the only planet we call home, it is a day to contemplate our consumer cultured landscape, a time to seek activities beyond malls and purchases.

Come join us in 2 FREE events at The Other Side Gallery! An exhibition with live art participation and a screening. Both are free admission and open to public.

Exhibition

AD-A-MANT – Series 1
(exhibition)
26th Nov 08 – 30th Nov 08

AD-A-MANT examines the relation of advertisements in public areas and that of our mental environment. Are there innocuous or sublime elements we have taken for granted? And if you had a chance to change it, what would you do?

Inspired by self-encouragement scrawled on study tables and discoloured walls…this INTERACTIONAL exhibition invites you to come and alter the space as you would LIKE it. Be a part of the art.

Watch artists reclaim public spaces in front of you, in LIVE ART ! (only on Friday)

Screening

WHAT WOULD JESUS BUY?
(documentary screening)
29th Nov 08

A refreshing take on consumerism, performance artist ‘Reverend Billy’ and the Church of Stop Shopping Gospel Choir goes on a cross-country mission to save Christmas from the Shopocalypse (the end of humankind from consumerism, over-consumption and the fires of eternal debt.) The film also delves into issues such as the role sweatshops play in America’s mass consumerism and Big-Box Culture.

About the Filmmaker
Director: Jacen Tan (Singapore) – Hosaywood.com
Jacen got lucky when his first short film, Tak Giu (Kick Ball), gained a cult following with 100,000 views in 6 months after it was distributed free on the Internet. In 2005, his 2nd film, Zo Peng (Go Army), won 2nd place at the Panasonic/MDA Digital Film Fiesta, Short Film Open Category. Jacen’s latest films, Zo Gang & Zo Hee (Go Work & Make Movie) continue his well-received style of low budget film making with a unique sense of local humour. He is currently working on Kwa Giu (Watch Football), a documentary about the electrifying match atmosphere in Singapore’s National Stadium, which is slated to be demolished.

Jacen also directed a music video for popular Singaporean alternative-rock band, Lunarin. ‘Silverpiece’ was shot in his living room and showcased at the MIDEM Music Market in Cannes.
About his films

Zo Peng (Go Army)
– 15min
Three friends help one another overcome their personal confinements, relationship and work problems during compulsory national service… with a twist!
Tak Giu (Kick Ball) – 15min
Having taken up the challenge of a friendly match, 3 soccer-crazy boys realize that it is not easy to find a good, free public soccer field in Singapore…..if there’s any at all. Through their journey they encounter obnoxious care-takers, locked-up fences, deterring weather and a persistent policeman. Will they be able to find their dream soccer pitch?

The story explores the issues of soccer amenities, and the attitudes of Singaporeans towards local and foreign soccer. 2 years after Tak Giu was released online and became a cult-hit, 284 State fields were upgraded and opened for public recreation.

Zo Gang (Go Work) – 9min
Film-maker wannabe, Ah-Tan is sick of his day job. Join Ah-Tan on his way to work one day, as he discusses and pokes fun at local film and music, while plotting his path to become Singapore’s next great director.

This comedy on the difficulties of making film and music will leave you wondering about the state of the Arts in Singapore!

Zo Hee (Make Movie) – 14min
In this sequel to the popular Zo Gang, follow Ah-Tan as he continues his journey to shoot his first film, facing problems like budget constraints and security guards. Zo Hee was specially commissioned by The Substation to celebrate indie filmmaking and commemorate 10 years of its Moving Images film programme.
Featuring cameo appearances by Singapore filmmakers like Tan Pin Pin, Juan Foo, Sun Koh and Lionel Chok.

Kwa Giu (Watch Football)
